What Genesis 1:29 Actually Says About Diet

"And God said, 'Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.' This was the original design: not a restriction, but a provision. Long before nutrition science existed, the Creator had already laid out a blueprint for how the human body was meant to be fed.

God's original plan still works.

What's remarkable isn't that this verse exists. It's how closely modern research has circled back to it. Decades of nutrition science point to the same foundation Genesis describes: a diet centered on whole plants (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds) consistently shows up as the common thread behind longer, healthier lives. The Adventist Health Studies, among the longest-running nutrition research in the world, found exactly this pattern playing out across decades of real data.

None of this makes other foods sinful or modern eating evil. It simply means the starting point, what the body was designed to thrive on, was given to us from the beginning. The further our habits drift from that design, the more our bodies tend to show it. And the closer we return to it, the more often we find what was true all along: God's original plan still works.

Your Body Isn't Broken: It's Responding

When chronic illness shows up, it's easy to feel betrayed by your own body, like something has gone permanently wrong with the design. But inflammation, fatigue, and many of the symptoms we associate with chronic illness aren't signs of a broken system. They're signs of a system doing exactly what it was built to do: respond.

Your body was never broken. It's been trying to tell you something the whole time.

Inflammation is the body's alarm system. It shows up when something is off (poor nutrition, chronic stress, lack of sleep, toxic exposure) and it persists for as long as that underlying cause persists. The problem isn't that the alarm is broken. It's that the alarm has been going off for years, and most approaches focus on silencing it rather than asking what triggered it in the first place.

Lifestyle medicine takes the second approach. Instead of only managing symptoms, it asks what the body is responding to, and addresses that. Sleep, nutrition, movement, sunlight, stress, and rest aren't soft suggestions; they're the actual inputs the body was designed to run on. Change the inputs, and the response often changes too. Your body was never broken. It's been trying to tell you something the whole time.

The Physician Who Wrote the Body

There's a quiet pattern showing up across modern medical research: conclusions that took decades of clinical trials and data to reach are often conclusions Scripture pointed to long before laboratories existed. Rest cycles. Fasting. Plant-based nutrition. Community and its effect on longevity. None of these are new discoveries: they're rediscoveries.

It was written by the physician who authored the body in the first place.

This isn't a coincidence, and it isn't science catching up to ancient superstition. It's what happens when the same Mind that designed the human body also wrote the instructions for caring for it. Scripture was never meant to compete with science: it was written by the physician who authored the body in the first place. Research, at its best, isn't replacing that wisdom. It's confirming it.

This is the conviction behind everything here at Original Plan: faith and evidence were never meant to be in tension. When we study how the body actually works, we keep finding our way back to a design that was laid out long before any of us were born, and the One who designed it left us more than enough instructions to care for it well.
